Russian military exercises in the Black Sea, in anticipation of the arrival of American ships

The Russian navy has launched a military exercise in the Black Sea, ahead of the expected arrival of US warships in the area, Russian news agencies reported.

The exercise involves Russian warships based in the Crimea-based Black Sea Fleet, helicopters and aircraft.
Two US warships are due to arrive in the Black Sea this week, while Washington and NATO have expressed concern about an increase in Russian troops on the border with Ukraine and Crimea.

The presence of American ships in this sea is not uncommon.

“It’s nothing new,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said last week.

Moscow yesterday warned the United States not to approach Crimea with its ships, for their own good.

According to the Kremlin, sending American ships to the Black Sea is a provocation in order to test Russia’s patience, Reuters reported.
